Tips for seeing the northern lights: An Expansive Guide to Witnessing the Northern Lights in Tromsø by Arctic Cruise in Norway

Introduction__________________________________________________

As the northern lights season approaches, the enchanting prospect of witnessing this natural marvel in Tromsø beckons countless adventurers. To aid you in this pursuit, we present a comprehensive guide that covers the scientific marvel of the northern lights, the best and worst conditions for viewing, combating light pollution, booking tips, preparational tips, and more.

Scientific Marvel of the Northern Lights

Scientifically known as aurora borealis, the northern lights occur because of the sun and the Earth's magnetic field. The sun constantly emits charged particles, protons and electrons. This phenomena is called «solar wind». When these particles collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, i.e, when the solar wind reaches the Earth’s magnetic field, they emit beautiful, colorful lights, painting the night sky with mesmerizing hues of green, purple, pink, and blue. It is the speed of these solar winds that affect the power of the northern lights - the more powerful the wind, the more vibrant the lights.

Best and Worst Conditions in Tromsø

Clear, crisp winter nights provide the best conditions for observing the northern lights. Avoid full moon nights and overcast skies, as they can obscure the spectacle. Tromsø's proximity to the Arctic Circle enhances the likelihood of witnessing vibrant auroras because of the polar night.
The longer the darkness, the higher the chances of seeing the northern lights.
The polar night in Tromsø starts on the 27th of November and lasts until the 14th of January, meaning the sun is gone for 47 whole days!

If the weather report and aurora forecast is not on your side during your stay in Tromsø, Arctic Cruise in Norway offers a range of other trips during winter, and we would like to present them to you:

Now, back to the northern lights.

Light Pollution and Northern Lights

Light pollution significantly hampers aurora visibility. We in Arctic Cruise in Norway know the best spots for viewing the full splendor of the northern lights. If you’ve booked a trip by car and the northern lights are stubborn, we are determined to hunt them down and will drive around using our aurora maps to find it. We don’t call it «Aurora Chase» for nothing!
Tromsø offers various locations, both within the city and its outskirts, ensuring a perfect balance between accessibility and darkness, so if you plan on visiting Tromsø to view this celestial wonder, you’re on the right track.

Best Spots in Tromsø

Prime locations like Tromsøsundet, where we go on our boat trips, provide a panoramic view of the northern lights. Alternatively, venturing out by car to remote areas away from city lights enhances your chances of an unobstructed view, promising a truly magical experience.
This is a matter of combining preference and forecasts: If you would like to see the aurora’s from a boat in the middle of the sea, make sure to do your research before choosing when you’re traveling to Tromsø.
Remember the keys: Crisp winter, not on a full moon night and clear skies.
If you happen to be in Tromsø in September/early October when the winter hasn’t truly set in yet, by all means, book with us, we would love to have you, but manage your expectations so you won’t be too disappointed if the lights do not show up.

Preparational Guide for Catching the Northern Lights

1. Timing
Visit between late September and early April for optimal chances. Remember, the longer the darkness, the higher the chances.

2. Ideal Hours
Northern lights are often visible from late evening to early morning.

3. Weather Reports
Monitor local weather forecasts for clear skies and suitable conditions.

4. Aurora Forecasts
Utilize aurora forecasting apps for real-time updates on aurora activity.

5. Dress Appropriately
Wear layers, thermal clothing, gloves, and a hat to stay warm. Bring an extra scarf and/or sweater for added insulation. On our boats we have warm suits you can borrow if need be, and in our cars we have extra hats and mittens.
We always have hot drinks available on all our trips to keep you warm on the inside as well.

Tromsøsundet vs. Car Viewing

While Tromsøsundet offers convenience, viewing from a car allows flexibility to chase clear skies. A guided tour with Arctic Cruise in Norway ensures both comfort and mobility, providing an optimal experience tailored to your preferences.

Nature offers no guarantees. Be well-prepared, follow our tips, and manage your expectations. At Arctic Cruise in Norway, we prioritize your comfort and safety. A Fjord Sightseeing Adventure: Tromsø City to Tromvika in a Tesla X

The chilly wind whipped through the air, causing shivers and excitement in equal measure as we began our fjord sightseeing adventure from Tromsø City to Tromvika in the luxurious Tesla X. The sleek electric car provided a warm and comfortable refuge against the biting cold, making our frequent stops to admire the breathtaking views all the more enjoyable.

Our guest’s anticipation to encounter some reindeer was met with an unforgettable experience after passing Grøtfjord. The cute and majestic creatures blocked the road and walked right beside the car, allowing us to take up-close photos of them. Here we were, in the middle of the glorious nature, far away from the city.

Arriving in Tromvika felt like stepping into the pages of a captivating storybook. The fishing village exuded an aura of ancient charm, with its quaint harbor, fishing boats bobbing gently on the water, and small houses nestled along the shoreline. I couldn’t help but imagine the lives of the villagers, mothers baking in cozy kitchens, children playing by the shore, and brave men venturing into the unknown on their boats, striving to provide for their families.

In this mystical setting, my thoughts turned to Draugen, a mythical creature from Norse folklore. Draugen, often described as an undead spirit or a ghostly figure, was believed to haunt the seas and shores of Norway. Tales of this enigmatic being circulated among the locals, adding an element of mystery to the already thrilling atmosphere. The howling wind seemed to echo these ancient stories, making the folklore come alive in our imaginations.

After soaking in the awe-inspiring beauty of Tromvika, we continued our journey to Ersfjord, where our trip culminated at Bryggejentene. Here, we were treated to a delightful culinary experience – an apple bun infused with cinnamon and raisins, capturing the essence of fall in every bite. As we savored the flavors, we reflected on our fjord sightseeing adventure, a day filled with wonder, folklore, and the undeniable charm of Norway’s coastal treasures.

A Magical Evening Aboard the Arctic Princess: Connecting Cultures

A group of eager travelers from Brazil, China, and Russia gathered at the bustling port city's harbor. They were about to embark on a journey aboard the catamaran Arctic Princess, seeking the elusive Northern Lights.

Surrounded by the shimmering city lights of Tromsø, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation. The weather, surprisingly warm for the latter part of September, had blessed them with still waters, setting the perfect stage for a memorable adventure.

Tromsø Island

As the Arctic Princess set sail, the captain expertly navigated the vessel through the calm Norwegian waters. Inside the outer saloon, guests nestled into cozy sheepskin-covered sofas. Chocolate, cookies, and potato chips flowed freely, offered as a gesture of welcome and comfort.

The catamaran glided gracefully on the tranquil sea, and guests had the luxury of enjoying the Arctic views from various angles inside the boat. Coffee and tea stations were readily available, allowing them to warm up as they soaked in the mesmerizing cityscape fading into the distance.

By the Light of Moon

As the Arctic Princess ventured further into the ocean, Tromsø Island became a diminishing dot on the horizon. It was an experience of letting the to-dos of the world slip away, and glide into the stillness and calm of the open waters.

Out at sea, the crew of Arctic Cruise in Norway served their famous fish soup. The guests savored every spoonful, the warmth and flavors a delightful contrast to the cool Arctic air. It was a moment of unity, as travelers from diverse backgrounds shared a communal meal in the cozy catamaran.

“This is definitely one of the best meals we’ve had during our stay” - guest from China

The stillness of the sea is broken by a shout:  «Come and see!»
The shy Northern Lights made their appearance. Subtle wisps of neon green lit up the clouds and stretched as a sheer veil across the night sky. Cameras clicked and grateful excitement filled the air.

One of the guests, Dmitry, a well-seasoned traveler from Russia, shared his tales of journeys around the world. He explained that this was his first time in Tromsø. He had seen the Northern Lights before and was here primarily to explore the charming city.
"I wasn't here so much for the Northern Lights as I just wanted to see the city of Tromsø," he revealed with a smile.

“Smooth, nice weather and still waters” - Dmitry

His words highlighted the essence of Arctic Cruise of Norway's mission—to provide guests with a comfortable, relaxing, and social experience while creating opportunities for cultural exchange. A journey with Arctic Cruise in Norway is a bridge where different worlds meet. It's an opportunity to learn about both the differences and similarities across cultures. It's a privilege to spend a few hours with visitors in the magic of the North, whether the Northern Lights are weak or strong, the pure joy of connecting as human beings wandering this earth together cannot be taken for granted.

Ursa Major, or “The Great Bear”, as seen from The Arctic Princess at Sea

Though the Northern Lights were only making a modest appearance that night, the guests aboard the Arctic Princess truly enjoyed the experience. They had witnessed the allure of Tromsø, enjoyed a warm meal, and forged connections with fellow travelers from around the world. As the catamaran glided back toward the port city, the atmosphere reflected the magic of a memorable journey—a journey that showcased the silent wonder of the Arctic and the richness of human connections.
